Description
Crispy, crunchy, and naturally sweet apple chips made in the air fryer. A healthier snack alternative that’s easy to prepare, these apple chips are the perfect balance of sweetness and crunch.
Ingredients
For the Air Fryer Apple Chips:
- 2 medium apples (choose your favorite variety, such as Fuji, Honeycrisp, or Granny Smith)
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional)
- A pinch of salt (optional)
Instructions
Start by washing the apples thoroughly to remove any wax or dirt. Since you’ll be leaving the skins on, it’s important to clean them well. Once the apples are clean, cut off the top and bottom of each apple to create a flat surface.
Using a mandoline slicer or a sharp knife, slice the apples into thin rounds, about 1/8 inch thick. Try to keep the slices as uniform as possible to ensure they cook evenly. If you want perfectly round apple chips, remove the core of the apple with an apple corer or carefully cut around the seeds to avoid any seeds in the chips.
To prevent the apple slices from browning too quickly, you can soak them in a mixture of lemon juice and water. Fill a bowl with about a cup of water and add the tablespoon of lemon juice. Place the apple slices in the lemon water for about 5 minutes. This step is optional, but it helps preserve the bright color of the apple slices.
After soaking, drain the apple slices and pat them dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture. This will ensure that the chips crisp up nicely in the air fryer.
If you like a touch of cinnamon on your apple chips, sprinkle the slices with cinnamon. You can also add a pinch of salt to enhance the flavor and bring out the natural sweetness of the apples. Toss the slices gently to coat them evenly with the seasoning.
For a sweeter touch, you can drizzle a little honey or maple syrup over the apple slices, but keep in mind that this will slightly alter the calorie count and texture. You can also experiment with other seasonings such as nutmeg or ginger for a spiced apple chip flavor.
Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C). Preheating ensures that the air fryer reaches the optimal temperature for cooking the apple chips, allowing them to crisp up without overcooking.
Lightly grease the air fryer basket with a spray of cooking oil to prevent the apple slices from sticking. Place the apple slices in the basket in a single layer, making sure they’re not overlapping. You may need to cook the apple chips in batches depending on the size of your air fryer.
If you want to make the chips extra crispy, you can spray the apple slices lightly with oil before air frying. This will help them crisp up and get a golden-brown texture.
Cook the apple slices in the preheated air fryer for 15-20 minutes, checking them halfway through. Every air fryer is a little different, so you may need to adjust the cooking time slightly based on your model. After the first 10 minutes of cooking, open the air fryer and give the apple slices a gentle shake to ensure even cooking.
Keep an eye on the chips as they cook. They should begin to crisp up and turn golden-brown by the end of the cooking time. Once the apple chips are crispy and golden, remove them from the air fryer and let them cool for a few minutes.
Once the apple chips have cooled slightly, serve them immediately. They’re best enjoyed fresh out of the air fryer when they’re perfectly crispy. If you prefer a sweeter snack, serve them with a drizzle of honey or a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar.
If you made a large batch, store any leftover apple chips in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Keep in mind that the chips will lose some of their crispiness over time, so it’s best to enjoy them right away.
