Description

This melt is comfort food at its best! Savory turkey, crispy bacon, and melty cheddar cheese come together on toasted sourdough for a warm, satisfying sandwich. It’s a savory, indulgent twist on the classic turkey sandwich.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cheddar and Bacon Turkey Melt on Sourdough:

  • 4 slices of sourdough bread
  • 8 ounces sliced cooked turkey breast (deli meat or leftover roast turkey)
  • 4 slices of cheddar cheese
  • 8 slices of cooked bacon
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Optional: fresh arugula or spinach, tomato slices, avocado slices

Instructions

1. Prepare the Ingredients

Start by gathering all of your ingredients. If you’re using store-bought deli turkey, slice it thinly. If you have leftover roasted turkey, slice it into thin, even pieces. Cook your bacon in a skillet over medium heat until crispy, then remove it from the skillet and drain on paper towels. You’ll need two slices of bacon for each sandwich.

Butter one side of each slice of sourdough bread. The butter will help achieve a crisp, golden-brown exterior when grilling the sandwich. Optionally, you can spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on the unbuttered side of the bread for a little extra tang.

2. Assemble the Sandwich

Lay out the bread slices on a clean surface with the buttered sides facing down. On the unbuttered side, place a slice of cheddar cheese on each piece of bread. Layer the sliced turkey evenly over the cheese. Then, top with two slices of bacon per sandwich, and if desired, add any optional ingredients like fresh arugula, spinach, tomato slices, or avocado slices.

Once the sandwich is stacked with your desired ingredients, close it with the second slice of bread, buttered side up.

3. Grill the Sandwich

Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Once hot, place the assembled sandwiches in the skillet, buttered side down. Press the sandwiches lightly with a spatula to ensure even contact with the surface and to help the cheese melt. Grill for about 3-4 minutes on each side, flipping the sandwich carefully when the bottom is golden brown and crispy. The cheese should be fully melted and gooey inside.

If you’re making multiple sandwiches, you can toast them one at a time, or use a griddle to cook all of them simultaneously.

4. Serve and Enjoy

Once the sandwiches are perfectly toasted and the cheese is melted, remove them from the skillet and let them cool for about a minute before cutting. Slice each sandwich in half or quarters for easy serving. Serve hot, with a side of chips, a light salad, or some pickles for the perfect meal.
