Description

Cornbread dressing is a classic, comforting side dish that embodies the spirit of Thanksgiving. Made from crumbled cornbread, sautéed vegetables, and fragrant herbs, it’s a flavorful blend that brings warmth and nostalgia to the holiday table. Typically enhanced with broth and sometimes sausage or turkey, this dressing is baked to golden perfection, creating a crispy top with a soft, savory interior. The combination of sweet cornbread and savory seasonings provides a rich, satisfying taste that pairs perfectly with roasted meats and gravies. Whether served as a stuffing or as a standalone side, cornbread dressing is a beloved tradition that evokes memories of family gatherings and festive celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 batch of cornbread (homemade or store-bought): The foundation of your dressing.
  • 1 cup onion, chopped: Adds sweetness and depth of flavor.
  • 1 cup celery, chopped: Provides crunch and freshness.
  • 1 cup bell peppers, diced: For a pop of color and flavor.
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced: Infuses the dressing with aromatic goodness.
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter: For sautéing vegetables and adding richness.
  • 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth: The liquid that brings everything together.
  • 2 large eggs, beaten: Acts as a binder for the dressing.
  • 1 tablespoon dried sage: Essential for that classic Thanksgiving flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon dried thyme: Adds warmth and depth.
  • Salt and pepper to taste: Essential for seasoning.
  • Optional: 1 cup cooked sausage or diced cooked turkey: For added protein and flavor.

Instructions

STEP 1: PREPARE THE CORNBREAD

Begin by making your cornbread, whether from scratch or using a store-bought mix. If making from scratch, prepare it according to your favorite recipe and allow it to cool completely. Once cooled, crumble the cornbread into large pieces. The texture should be fluffy yet sturdy enough to hold up during baking. If you’re using store-bought cornbread, be sure to choose a quality product for the best results.

STEP 2: Sauté the Vegetables

In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, celery, and bell peppers, sautéing until they are softened and translucent, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and sauté for another minute, until fragrant. This step not only develops the flavors but also adds a lovely aroma to your kitchen. If you’re adding sausage, you can cook it in the same skillet until browned, then remove and set aside.

STEP 3: Combine the Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the crumbled cornbread with the sautéed vegetables. If you cooked sausage, add it back in at this stage. Stir to combine evenly. The cornbread should soak up some of the flavors from the sautéed vegetables, creating a cohesive mixture.

STEP 4: Add Broth and Seasonings

Pour in the chicken or vegetable broth and mix until the cornbread is moistened but not soggy. You want the mixture to hold together but not be overly wet. Add the beaten eggs, dried sage, dried thyme, and salt and pepper to taste. Mix well until everything is evenly incorporated. This is where the dressing starts to come together, so take a moment to ensure it’s well combined.

STEP 5: Prepare for Baking

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or a similarly sized casserole dish. Transfer the cornbread mixture into the prepared dish, spreading it evenly. Use the back of a spoon to press it down gently; this will help the dressing hold together as it bakes.

STEP 6: Bake

Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 30-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the dressing is set. If the top starts to brown too quickly, you can cover it loosely with aluminum foil for the remainder of the baking time. The internal temperature should reach at least 160°F (70°C) when fully cooked.

STEP 7: Let it Rest and Serve

Once baked, remove the dressing from the oven and allow it to rest for about 10-15 minutes before serving. This resting period allows the flavors to meld and makes it easier to serve. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired for a pop of color and added freshness.
