Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf (about 12 slices) of French bread or challah, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
For the Topping:
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup chopped nuts (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Casserole:
- Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Arrange the bread cubes evenly in the dish.
- Mix the Egg Mixture:
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- Combine:
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, making sure all the bread is soaked. Gently press down on the bread to help it absorb the mixture.
- Cover and Chill:
- Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap or foil. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight, to allow the bread to fully absorb the egg mixture.
- Prepare the Topping:
- In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and cold butter pieces using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the chopped nuts if using.
- Preheat Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Add Topping:
- Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and sprinkle the topping evenly over the soaked bread.
- Bake:
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the casserole is set in the center.
- Serve:
- Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy warm with maple syrup, fresh fruit, or a dusting of powdered sugar.
