Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf (about 12 slices) of French bread or challah, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For the Topping:

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Casserole:
    • Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Arrange the bread cubes evenly in the dish.
  • Mix the Egg Mixture:
    • In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  • Combine:
    • Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, making sure all the bread is soaked. Gently press down on the bread to help it absorb the mixture.
  • Cover and Chill:
    • Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap or foil. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight, to allow the bread to fully absorb the egg mixture.
  • Prepare the Topping:
    • In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and cold butter pieces using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the chopped nuts if using.
  • Preheat Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Add Topping:
    • Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and sprinkle the topping evenly over the soaked bread.
  • Bake:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the casserole is set in the center.
  • Serve:
    • Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy warm with maple syrup, fresh fruit, or a dusting of powdered sugar.
