Description
Golden-brown, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside – this classic French toast is made with thick slices of bread soaked in a rich custard and then lightly fried. Top with syrup, fruit, or powdered sugar for a delicious breakfast treat.
Ingredients
For the French Toast:
- 4 slices of thick bread (preferably brioche, challah, or French bread)
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup milk (whole milk for a richer flavor, or use skim or almond milk for a lighter version)
- 1 tablespoon sugar (optional, for added sweetness)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
- 1 tablespoon butter or oil (for greasing the pan)
For Toppings (Optional):
- Maple syrup
- Powdered sugar
- Fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, etc.)
- Whipped cream
- Sliced bananas
- Nut butter (almond, peanut, etc.)
- Nuts (walnuts, almonds, or pecans)
- Chocolate chips
Instructions
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk until fully combined. Add the sugar, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon (if using). Whisk until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is smooth. This egg mixture is what will soak into the bread, giving French Toast its signature custard-like texture.
Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, making sure both sides are coated. Let the bread soak for 5-10 seconds on each side, allowing it to absorb the liquid. For thicker bread like brioche or challah, you may need to soak it slightly longer to ensure it absorbs enough of the custard.
Be careful not to let the bread sit too long in the egg mixture, as it may become too soggy and fall apart when cooking.
While soaking the bread, place a frying pan or griddle over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter or oil to the pan to prevent the bread from sticking and to give it a golden, crispy exterior. Allow the butter to melt and the pan to heat up before cooking the French Toast.
Once the pan is ready, place the soaked bread slices onto the pan. Don’t overcrowd the pan—cook the French Toast in batches if necessary. Let each slice cook for 3-4 minutes on the first side, or until it’s golden brown and crispy. Use a spatula to gently flip the bread to the other side and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, until the second side is also golden brown.
Once the French Toast is cooked, transfer it to a serving plate. If desired, keep the toast warm in a low-temperature oven (around 200°F or 90°C) while you finish cooking the remaining slices.
