Description

A quick and healthy meal packed with protein and veggies. This stir-fried dish combines tender ground beef with crisp broccoli in a savory sauce, making for a delicious and satisfying dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Ground Beef and Broccoli:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (preferably lean, such as 85% lean)
  • 1 large head of broccoli (about 4 cups of florets), cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or sesame oil for extra flavor)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced or grated
  • ¼ cup soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce (optional, for added sweetness)
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (optional, for extra umami)
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar (for balance)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil (optional, for extra richness)
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening sauce)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon green onions (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Ingredients

Begin by washing and cutting the broccoli into bite-sized florets. Trim off the tough stems and cut the florets into smaller pieces to ensure they cook evenly. Mince the garlic and ginger to add to the dish later.

2. Cook the Ground Beef

Heat a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Once the oil is hot, add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon or spatula as it cooks. Stir occasionally to ensure even cooking, and continue cooking until the beef is browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.

Drain any excess fat if necessary, but leave a little for flavor.

3. Sauté the Garlic and Ginger

Once the beef is browned, push it to one side of the pan and add the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil to the empty side. Add the minced garlic and ginger, sautéing for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Stir everything together, combining the beef with the garlic and ginger.

4. Add the Sauce Ingredients

In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, oyster sauce (if using), rice vinegar, and sesame oil (if using). Stir well to combine. If you prefer a thicker sauce, mix 1 teaspoon of cornstarch with 1 tablespoon of water in a separate bowl and add it to the sauce mixture. Pour the sauce over the ground beef and stir to coat the beef evenly in the sauce.

5. Cook the Broccoli

Add the broccoli florets to the skillet and stir them into the beef mixture. Pour in ¼ cup of water to help steam the broccoli and cook everything together. Cover the skillet and cook for 4-5 minutes, or until the broccoli is tender but still bright green and crisp. Stir occasionally to prevent burning and ensure even cooking.

6. Taste and Adjust Seasonings

Once the broccoli is tender, taste the dish and adjust the seasonings as needed. Add more soy sauce for saltiness, a splash of rice vinegar for acidity, or a pinch of sugar for sweetness if desired. Stir everything together and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes to meld the flavors.

7. Serve the Dish

Once everything is well-cooked and the sauce has thickened slightly, transfer the Ground Beef and Broccoli to a serving platter. Garnish with sliced green onions or sesame seeds if desired for a pop of color and extra flavor.
