Description

A comforting, hearty casserole with a savory beef and cheese filling, wrapped in a buttery, flaky crust. This dish brings the classic cheeseburger flavors to a whole new level, making it perfect for any family meal.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Pioneer Woman Cheeseburger Pie:

  • 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon ketchup
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or your favorite cheese)
  • 1 (9-inch) pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour (optional, for thickening)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano or Italian seasoning (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

1. Preheat the Oven and Prepare the Pie Crust

Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C). While the oven is heating, take the pie crust and place it into a 9-inch pie dish. If you’re using a store-bought crust, simply unroll it and press it into the dish. If you prefer homemade, roll out the dough and fit it into the pie dish. Set the crust aside while you prepare the filling.

2. Cook the Ground Beef

In a large skillet, heat a bit of oil over medium-high heat. Once the skillet is hot, add the ground beef, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon or spatula as it cooks. Brown the beef until it’s no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes.

Once the beef is cooked through, drain any excess grease from the pan. Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the beef and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes, until the onion softens and becomes translucent.

3. Season the Beef Mixture

To the cooked beef mixture, add Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, ketchup, salt, and pepper to taste. Stir everything together until the mixture is well combined and the flavors are evenly distributed. Remove the skillet from the heat and set it aside to cool slightly while you prepare the egg mixture.

4. Prepare the Egg Mixture

In a medium mixing bowl, beat the two eggs. Then, add the milk and flour (if using), whisking until the mixture is smooth and well combined. If you’re using dried oregano or Italian seasoning, add it to the egg mixture for an extra burst of flavor. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper to taste.

5. Assemble the Cheeseburger Pie

Spread the beef mixture evenly over the prepared pie crust. Make sure it’s spread out in an even layer so that each slice will have a good amount of filling.

Next, pour the egg mixture over the beef. This will help bind everything together and create a custard-like consistency once baked. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly on top of the egg mixture. You can use more or less cheese depending on your preference.

6. Bake the Cheeseburger Pie

Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the filling is set. You’ll know it’s done when the center is firm, and the top is golden brown with bubbly cheese.

Check the pie after about 30 minutes of baking; if the crust edges are browning too quickly, you can cover them with aluminum foil to prevent overbaking.

7. Cool and Serve

Once the pie is baked, remove it from the oven and let it cool for 5-10 minutes. This resting time allows the filling to set properly, making it easier to slice. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley or additional seasonings if desired.

Slice the pie into wedges and serve it warm. Pair it with a simple salad, some pickles, or a side of your favorite vegetables to round out the meal.
