Description
Savory, juicy sausages grilled to perfection and topped with caramelized bell peppers and onions, all served in a soft bun. This classic, hearty dish is packed with bold flavors and is perfect for a quick, satisfying meal or casual gathering!
Ingredients
For the Sausage and Peppers in a Bun:
- 4–6 sausages (Italian sausages, bratwurst, or your preferred variety)
- 2 bell peppers (red, green, or yellow), thinly sliced
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 4–6 soft sandwich buns or hoagie rolls
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional toppings: Mustard, ketchup, hot sauce, or shredded cheese (such as mozzarella or provolone)
Instructions
1. Cook the Sausages
Start by heating a large skillet or grill pan over medium heat. Add the sausages to the pan and cook, turning occasionally, until they are browned on all sides and cooked through. This should take about 10-12 minutes. If you’re grilling, preheat the grill to medium heat and cook the sausages for the same amount of time, turning occasionally.
Once the sausages are cooked, remove them from the pan or grill and set them aside. You can also slice the sausages into smaller pieces if you prefer to serve them as cut-up bites in the bun.
2. Cook the Peppers and Onions
In the same skillet (or a separate one), add the olive oil and heat it over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and bell peppers to the skillet and season with salt and pepper. Stir occasionally, allowing the peppers and onions to cook for about 8-10 minutes, or until they are tender and slightly caramelized. The natural sugars in the onions and peppers will caramelize, creating a rich, sweet flavor that complements the savory sausages perfectly.
If you like your peppers and onions more well-done, you can cook them for a few more minutes until they reach your desired level of tenderness.
3. Toast the Buns
While the sausages and peppers are cooking, it’s a great time to toast the buns. Lightly butter the sandwich buns or hoagie rolls and place them on a skillet or under a broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until they are golden and crispy. Toasting the buns adds a bit of crunch and helps prevent them from becoming soggy once the sausage and peppers are added.
4. Assemble the Sausage and Peppers in a Bun
Once the sausages are cooked and the peppers and onions are tender, it’s time to assemble your sausages and peppers in a bun. Place each sausage in the toasted bun, then top with a generous helping of the cooked peppers and onions. You can slice the sausages in half for easier handling, or leave them whole depending on your preference.
5. Add Toppings and Serve
If you’re using any additional toppings such as mustard, ketchup, hot sauce, or shredded cheese, now is the time to add them. Simply drizzle or sprinkle the toppings over the sausage and peppers to enhance the flavor and add a personal touch to each bun. Serve immediately while the sausages and peppers are hot.
