Ingredients

Scale

For the Sloppy Joe Filling:

  • 1 lb ground beef – The heart of any sloppy joe, offering flavor and protein. You can also use ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped – Adds depth of flavor and a bit of sweetness.
  • 1 small bell pepper, finely chopped (optional) – A great way to add some color and extra veggies to the filling.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced – For aromatic flavor and savory richness.
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce – The base of the sloppy joe sauce, offering tang and moisture.
  • 1/4 cup ketchup – Adds sweetness and a mild tang.
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce – For that rich, savory umami flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar – A touch of sweetness to balance out the acidity of the tomato sauce.
  • 1 teaspoon mustard – Adds a tangy kick to the sauce.
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika – To add a smoky, savory flavor to the mix.
  • Salt and pepper – To taste, for seasoning.

For the Texas Toast:

  • 4 slices Texas toast (thick-cut bread) – The star of this dish, adding texture and crunch.
  • 4 tablespoons butter, softened – To butter the toast for that golden, crispy finish.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional) – For extra flavor in the toast.

Instructions

Step 1: Toast the Texas Toast

Start by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C). Arrange the Texas toast slices on a baking sheet and spread butter evenly on each slice. If you’d like to add extra flavor, sprinkle a little garlic powder on top of the butter.

Bake the toast in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes or until golden and crispy. Keep an eye on it, as Texas toast can brown quickly. Once toasted, remove from the oven and set aside.

Step 2: Cook the Ground Beef

While the toast is baking, heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef to the skillet and break it up with a wooden spoon. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Once the beef is cooked, drain any excess fat.

Add the chopped onion, bell pepper (if using), and garlic to the skillet. Sauté until the vegetables have softened and the onions are translucent, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 3: Make the Sloppy Joe Sauce

Add the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, and smoked paprika to the skillet. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer. Let the mixture cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. The sauce should thicken and the flavors will meld together.

Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper to suit your taste.

Step 4: Assemble the Sloppy Joes

Once the sloppy joe filling is ready, it’s time to assemble the sandwiches. Place a generous amount of the beef mixture on one slice of toasted Texas toast, then top with another slice of toast to make a sandwich.

You can also serve the sloppy joe mixture open-faced, with one slice of toast topped with the beef mixture, for a slightly lighter option.
